Form and materials
Urban is recognisable by its straight lines and clear silhouettes. The furniture has architectural precision. Nothing is round just to be soft; if a form is soft (like a velvet sofa), it is there to create contrast with something hard.
Key forms:
- Sharp, geometric silhouettes
- Modular systems and clean lines
- Low profiles with a clear horizontal emphasis
Materials that define the style:
- Black-stained oak. The natural texture of the wood shows, but the colour gives it an urban weight. In coffee tables, shelving systems, dining tables.
- Chrome and steel. In legs, hardware, lamps. Not brass, that is too warm. Here the metal should be cool and reflective.
- Velvet. Deeply coloured, with a pronounced lustre. In seating and cushions. The way velvet shifts between light and shadow heightens the graphic expression.
- Leather. Black or dark brown, with a taut surface. Not patinated and soft as in Classic; here the leather should have structure and precision.
- Glass and mirrored surfaces. In tables, shelves, details. Reflections create depth in monochrome rooms.
The materials in Urban should contrast. Soft becomes softer next to hard. Matt becomes deeper next to gloss.
Colour palette
Urban's palette is restrained and graphic:
- Chalk white and deep black as the foundation
- Graphite and steel grey as the middle register
- Petrol or cobalt as a single accent
- Animal print (zebra, leopard) as a graphic element, not maximalist, but as a pattern in its own right
This is the only one of the three worlds where black is a load-bearing colour. And the only one where an accent colour such as cobalt blue or petrol is allowed to break the monochrome. But sparingly. A cushion. A vase. A picture frame. Never a whole wall.
Brands that fit
Jio Möbler offers several models with the straight, architectural form language Urban demands. Jio Leonard is the style's hero piece, a sofa with sharp lines and a clear silhouette that sets the tone for an entire room. Jio Metropolitan, with its restrained expression, is another strong choice.
Kelly Wearstler for Visual Comfort & Co. designs lighting that is sculptural rather than decorative. The Liaison Ceiling Light in glass and metal has exactly the graphic quality Urban calls for, a lamp that is as much a work of art as a light source.
CTO Lighting works with clean geometric forms in glass and metal. Nimbus and Ivy Pendant are examples of lighting that strengthens an architectural room.
Cole & Son has wallpapers with graphic patterns: geometric, black and white, sometimes with a single accent colour. Perfect for a feature wall that gives the Urban room a layer of pattern without breaking the monochrome.
Versace Home offers wallpapers with a strong graphic identity. Not the maximalist Versace you might have in mind, but patterns with clear outlines and a sense of contrast.
Where the style comes into its own
Urban works best in rooms with architectural clarity. High ceilings, clean lines, materials such as concrete, steel or large expanses of glass.
City apartments. Modern urban homes with open-plan layouts. Urban gives the room an identity without needing much floor space. A sofa with a clear silhouette, a graphic wallpaper and the right lighting are enough.
Lofts. Industrial spaces with concrete, exposed pipes and high ceilings. Urban fills the space without domesticating it. The furniture shares the attitude of the architecture.
New builds with a minimalist base. White walls, large windows, no mouldings. Urban adds the character the architecture deliberately leaves open. The contrasts between black furniture and white wall, velvet and concrete, glass and wood create rooms that are restrained but never empty.
Creative homes. Homes where the interior is allowed to have attitude. Where a work of art and a sofa can hold a conversation. Where a lamp doesn't just give light, it comments on the room.
How to begin
Start with the contrast. Choose a sofa in a dark tone, black, graphite, deep petrol, with a straight, clear silhouette. Place it against a pale wall. That creates the foundation.
Then add lighting with a sculptural quality. In Urban the lamp is never merely functional; it is a graphic element in the room. Choose metal over wood, glass over textile.
If you want pattern: choose one. A graphic wallpaper on one wall, or an animal-print touch in a cushion or throw. Never more than one pattern in the same room.
Urban is about control.
