Daffodil dates from around 1891 and was drawn by John Henry Dearle. The pattern is based on observed nature rather than ornament, and that difference is what makes it still work today. John Henry Dearle joined Morris & Co as an apprentice, learned the craft in the workshop and became the company's chief designer after William Morris's death in 1896.

The pattern repeat is 22.5 cm, which makes it a small repeat. The small scale keeps the pattern discreet enough to carry a whole room. A straight match makes the fabric easy to make up. Daffodil is available in 2 colourways — Pink/Leaf Green and Cove Blue/Chocolate. The difference between them is greater than you might think — the same pattern can give you either a muted or a light room.

The fabric is 137.2 cm wide and woven in a cotton blend. The Martindale rating is 12 000 rubs, which places the fabric in the curtain and decorative class rather than upholstery.

The pattern works particularly well in living rooms and bedrooms. The look combines a classic poise, a rustic note and a closeness to nature, with a light overall tone. Large-scale motifs show to best advantage on curtains and larger surfaces, less so on cushions and details.
