The designer behind Artichoke Velvet is John Henry Dearle, who drew the pattern in 1897. It is one of the motifs that have carried Morris & Co through more than a century without ever feeling dated. John Henry Dearle joined Morris & Co as an apprentice, learned the craft in the workshop and became the company’s chief designer after William Morris’s death in 1896.

The pattern repeat is 32.0 cm, which makes it a medium-sized repeat. The scale is well judged — the pattern reads clearly without dominating the wall. The pattern is a straight match, which makes hanging easier. Artichoke Velvet comes in 4 colourways — Tump, Barbed Berry, Inky Fingers/Blush and Midnight/Pearwood. Artichoke Velvet comes from Wardle Velvets. The velvet catches the light and gives the pattern a depth that a print on flat-woven cloth cannot achieve.

The fabric is 136.5 cm wide and woven in a cotton blend. At 50 000 rubs on the Martindale scale, it handles upholstery in a home setting with a good margin.

Artichoke Velvet is at its best in living rooms and bedrooms. The look has a classic poise, closeness to nature and sophisticated restraint, with a dark overall tone. Mix it with plain fabrics for balance, and let the pattern sit where it will be seen.
