Snakeshead Velvet dates from 1876 and was designed by William Morris. The pattern is based on observed nature rather than ornament, and that difference is what makes it still work today.

The pattern repeat is 32.5 cm, which makes it a medium-sized repeat. It is a size that works in both small and large rooms. A straight match makes hanging straightforward. Snakeshead Velvet comes in 3 colourways — Crimson/Saffron, Mulberry/Saffron and Thistle/Russet. The difference between them is greater than you might think — the same pattern can give you a muted room or a light one.

Snakeshead Velvet is part of Rouen Velvets from Morris & Co. The velvet catches the light and gives the pattern a depth that a print on a flat weave cannot reach.

The fabric is 135 cm wide and woven in a cotton blend. With 40,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, it comfortably withstands upholstery use in the home.

The pattern works particularly well in living rooms and bedrooms. The look has a classic poise, elegance and sophisticated restraint, with a dark overall tone. Large-scale motifs are shown to best advantage on curtains and larger surfaces, smaller ones on cushions and details.
